What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition in which men have abnormally enlarged breasts due to an increase in glandular tissue. It can occur in males of all ages but is usually noticed during the newborn period, puberty, and adulthood. It is a common condition and can affect 50% of men at some point in their lives.
Gynecomastia is usually harmless but in some cases, it is associated with pain in the breasts. Usually, it resolves on its own and doesn’t require any surgery. You may opt for surgery if it makes you feel embarrassed or lowers your self-esteem.

What Causes Gynecomastia?
Puberty: During puberty, hormonal imbalances are common, leading to temporary gynecomastia. This usually resolves on its own as hormone levels stabilize.
Medications: Certain medications, such as steroids, anti-androgens, and some antidepressants, can cause gynecomastia as a side effect.
Medical Conditions: Conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease, and hyperthyroidism can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to gynecomastia.
Aging: As men age, testosterone levels naturally decline, which can result in gynecomastia.
Obesity: Excess weight can increase estrogen levels in the body, contributing to the development of gynecomastia.
When to See a Doctor?
If you are concerned about gynecomastia, it is important to consult a doctor. They can diagnose the condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment based on the severity and underlying cause.
Treatment Options for Gynecomastia:
Medications: For severe or persistent cases, medication may be prescribed. Options include:
- Aromatase Inhibitors: These medications block the production of estrogen.
- Testosterone Replacement Therapy: This can help balance hormone levels.
Surgery: In cases where gynecomastia causes significant emotional distress or does not respond to medication, surgery may be recommended.
- Breast Reduction Surgery: This procedure removes excess breast tissue to create a more masculine chest contour.
Important Considerations
- Gynecomastia is a common condition and is not usually indicative of a serious underlying health issue.
- Most cases resolve on their own without treatment.
- Severe or persistent gynecomastia can be effectively treated with medication or surgery.
